The Bluffs Entry

The Bluffs on the Cape Fear is a gated community development located on the high banks of the Cape Fear River just a 30 minute boat-ride from downtown Wilmington, NC. Their objective with this entry design was to convey the rich maritime and naval stores history of the land on which it is sited. Imagery of earthen forts for which coastal North Carolina is famous is subtly conveyed through the use of bulkheaded earth forms and native grown pine for pilings and sheet-piles. The sailing ship logo of the development suggests a “branding-iron” type design, reflecting the method by which the early natives of this land marked their wares. Backlighting the delicate sculptural copper sign appropriately lends an almost eerie tone of times when pirates lurked the shores and backwaters of coastal North Carolina. Plantings and landscape design was executed in cooperation with Dan Blackman, Landscape Architect.
